How to Stay in Business: A Data Center Institute Report on Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity

A recent AFCOM survey of data center managers revealed that although most data centers are physically expanding, storing more critical data than ever before, running more web applications, and are absolutely vital to the company's ability to continue in business, too many do not have the disaster recovery plans in place that they need. Two-thirds of all data centers have no plan at all for the prevention of or recovery from cyber crime; only half have any procedures established to replace critical hardware following a disaster; and almost 40% of those data centers that have implemented cloud computing, have adopted no security procedures to guard against the loss of critical data on the cloud.

In this report AFCOM's Data Center Institute provides important information on the adequacy of existing plans and recommendations for improving recovery from all types of unexpected interruptions to business and IT operations. Among the recommendations in the study are the seven key components, such as electrical and security systems, that a business continuity plan needs to cover; the two priority recovery levels for every component; and the eight key steps necessary to leverage the cloud for disaster recovery.
