That’s a wrap on Data Center World 2022!

From the desk of Liz Cruz, Director of Data Center Programs

It was truly a fantastic four days in Austin last week! The show was packed with industry experts, old friends, and new ideas. And it wasn’t just me that felt that way! A few comments from our beloved AFCOM members:

o “Overall, an excellent conference.   And I’ve attended every DCW for more than two decades. I don’t think that any stacked up as well.”
o “I thought this was our best DCW yet, and I got that feedback from many others, too!”
o “It was an honor to share time with everyone, learn from everyone, and the success everyone brings to this this large, small world of Data Centers.”

Top Highlights of the Week:

Thought Provoking, Yet Relatable Keynotes This year’s keynotes provided insight into the industry’s future while also providing actionable guidance on how to prepare & compete. Check out overviews of each.
Tuesday’s Representatives From Dell and Switch Ponder the Next Phase in Business IT
Wednesday’s Industrialized Construction Brings New Efficiencies to Modern Data Centers
Thursday’s Non-technological Factors Are Set to Define the Future of IT

Incredible Networking Experiences Our inaugural conference party was even more fun than expected. Over 400 people attended the party, enjoyed live country music, sported the bandanas provided by the host, Autodesk, and enjoyed tequila tasting. Our 2nd annual Women in Data Center Reception also brought so many people together, showing the industry’s widespread support for women in this field. And lastly, our Thursday afternoon site tours of two colocation facilities culminated in an 80+ person happy hour at a local brewery – where people shared their own experiences with colocation services and also all the fun things they’d seen and done in Austin during the week (Stevie Ray Vaughan’s statue was a reported hit!)

Power Up Program For the first time in Data Center World history, we hosted 25 high school and college students to inform & inspire them about the rewards of working in the data center industry. Our very own GenNext Advisory Board member Michail Clutter and AFCOM Potomac's TJ Ciccone put on a program that brought laughter and enthusiasm from the students. The best 60 seconds of the entire week was when TJ asked the students, “what is a data center?” One high-school student answered, “Data Centers are just big thumb drives attached to the internet.” Also, it became highly apparent that if exhibitors/sponsors ever need to clear out their swag at the end of a show, invite a bunch of <25-year-old students!

Leaders Lab Workshop on Sustainability Monday was home to our first in-person Leaders Lab since the pandemic, and boy, was it a treat to be a part of! We invited a dozen senior data center practitioners to discuss the best practices for sustainable data center operations. We moved the conversation beyond the “Why” to the very practical “How” to implement best practices. Walking into the workshop, one participant said, “this is an ambitious task!” upon leaving, they reported, “well, that was fun!” Read more here.

Join us back in Austin next year, May 8-11, 2023, to make more memories and continue to inspire this community.
